If you're ever not feeling like Valentines you could always celebrate the best state in the union.  I'll be the first to admit I have some issues with desert and heat (see this post for more details).  Luckily not all of AZ falls into that category. Arizona is the only state I've ever lived in- and it will always be my favorite, no matter how many months summer lasts.  Matt and I are both native Arizonans- by quite a few generations.  I'm not even sure how many, at least 4 or 5 through my Tayrien/Allen side and Matt's Whitmer line.  In honor of the day here is an AZ state trivia quiz for you that any fourth grader worth his/her salt (or copper- hint) could pass.  See how you do-

4.  Which four states meet at the four corners?
5. What is the state's highest mountain?
6. AZ is the _______ largest state in land area. A) 3rd B) 10th C) 6th D) 4th
7. Phoenix is the _________ largest city in pop. in the country A) 4th B) 7th C) 11th

9. List these 10 largest cities in order of size biggest to smallest. Tucson, Tempe, Phoenix, Yuma, Mesa, Gilbert, Scottsdale, Glendale, Chandler, Peoria
10. How many rainy/cloudy days does AZ average in a year?

ANSWER KEY

1. copper, cattle, cotton, citrus, climate (that's how we get all the snow birds you know)
2.  48th (only Hawaii and Alaska came later)
3.  Lake Havasu City- we should work that into the London Bridge song
4. AZ UT CO NM (we also border Mexico and CA and NV)
5. Mount Humphreys North of Flagstaff 12,643 ft (take that PHX and Tucson people Mt. Lemon and Camelback hah!)
6.  C) 6th
7. B) 7th 1.2 million of the state's 5 mil residents (also the largest capital city- think about it- most big cities NYC, LA, Chicago, etc are not actually the capital)- Sky Harbor is the 6th busiest airport
8. Sandra Day O'Conner
9.Phoenix, Tucson, Mesa, Glendale, Chandler, Scottsdale, Gilbert, Tempe, Peoria, Yuma (okay, a 4th grader might not know that one)  of the 10 cities 8 are in the PHX metro area- it's a pretty big jumble of cities- think miles of beige stucco houses with tile roofs
10. 69- 211 days of sunshine and 85 days partly cloudy- I wonder if we beat out the sunshine state.
***All of these pictures are just unedited snapshots off our old digital camera- I didn't even break into the Arizona Highway's image bank of gorgeous pictures.
Anyone who has seen the Grand Canyon, Oak Creek Canyon, hiked Humphrey's peak or Havasupai, or seen a real a AZ monsoon will tell you AZ has an other-worldly kind of beauty. I recommend visiting in the winter- it's beautiful right now.  We did have probably the first rainy day of the year today- only 68 left!

How did you do on the quiz?  What do you love/hate about AZ?

  1. Hey I did pretty good on the quiz! Especially since the bulk of my schooling was not in Arizona! I had no clue on the first one. And I loved your explanation on #9. It is miles and miles of boring beige/tan/brown houses AND landscaping. When I moved here, that took me a LONG time to get over. I like all of your pictures. Happy Birthday, Arizona!

  3. Good post. I couldn't remember the last C (Climate). Also not be picky or anything, but we also border NV. Arizona is and will always be my favorite state as well. I hope to move back some day.

  4. Aw man, Erin! You're making me miss Arizona even more! This post sent me over the edge and I made a decision that if we can afford it, we'll be snow birds when we retire. That made me feel a whole lot better!

  5. I only got 5/10 but I did get almost all the city orders correct! I love AZ and I've been to all those places mentioned. Maybe I can convince John to stay here forever!

  6. I did pretty well for the most part! Carter just cracked me up--he's trying to remember the 5 c's and couldn't think of 2, so he came up with catfish! (he says it's the state fish).

I love AZ! The weather (except for July and August, and sort of June and September), the variety of the landscape, the 2 garden seasons!

  8. I only missed the last two... and I missed it because I decided it took too long. So... 8/10 for laziness. Woo.

  9. I only got 6/10. That was with partial credit. I missed climate, but substituted canyons. I forgot the name of the mountain. Isn't San Francisco Peaks good enough? I thought Sandra day was from New Mexico. Like that artist that does the closeups of flowers, Georgia O'keefe. Ha! And who did you think would get that last question? I got a number of the cities in order, but your question wasn't clear about land area vs. population, so that's my excuse.

I'm pretty much a geography failure at your quiz. Bummer.
