Nautical Boy Nursery!

Here it is, at least done enough to take some pictures!  I only needed to be pregnant an extra 6 months to get it all done.  Thank heavens the babies don't wait until everything is done!  I had so much fun finally doing a boy room!  When Miles gets a little older we'll move Olly in here.  The room is small and very tall under the peak of our vaulted ceilings.  We will definitely do a bunk bed or maybe even build a loft at some point. Here's the link to my "Boy Oh Boy" board on pinterest where I kept my inspiration pictures.  I tried to link to where I bought things or where I got the ideas in case you want to check them out.
Hobby Lobby has a ton of cute nautical stuff- I had to restrain myself.  It's on the way home from my doctor and the kids' doctor so I would use one 40% off coupon each time for the things I loved the most!

Excuse the cushion- I kept having to shoo children out of the pictures and I somehow missed the cushion. My mom reupholstered the chair when I was expecting Charlotte.  I didn't really need another crib bumper but our neighbors were selling a red gingham Pottery Barn Kids one at a yard sale for $10 instead of $100.  My mom helped me make the curtains copying these ones (also Pottery Barn of course- I really should stop getting their catalog- it makes it hard to think other stuff is cute anymore.)  I bought 2 navy panels with grommets at Anna's Linens and then one white panel we cut for the stripes and sewed on top for $30 total instead of $180 for the Pottery Barn ones.  So that's why the white stripes are darker than the navy blue ones- the double thickness.

I'll take better pictures of the grandma quilts (sailboats and turtles respectively) another time.

I was thinking about making these nautical flags either sewing each piece like they did or painting with fabric paint and painters tape.  In the end I decided to fork out the $30 to Land of Nod when they had a cheaper shipping deal.  I'm so glad I did!  It's probably my favorite part of the room.  They are so well made and I love the toggles and the rope- it was longer than I was picturing and makes a big statement across this very tall room.

Again, I thought about making this turtle to be Miles' animal we use to compare how much he grows, but when it went on clearance I just bought it from Pottery Barn.  Are you seeing a trend?
This is a very big wall without much furniture on it.  I wanted a map to make a big statement.  Originally I was thinking of completely covering the short wall with maps- almost like wall paper.  When I found these canvases Matt loved them.  They were pricey but I think they will be great in an older boy room as well or  I wouldn't mind moving them to another room if the boys ever don't want them.  I like the idea of them looking at lots of places on these maps. Usually the play kitchen is on this wall and later probably Olly's bed so I put them up a little higher- now I need to raise up the flags a little too.

It took a lot of measuring and a few extra holes to get them all hung the right distance apart.
Changing table/ Dresser we bought off craigslist with Charlotte.  My friend Donna gave me the piggy bank.

Children's books illustrations are my favorite!  I like artists like Norman Rockwell and Mary Englebreit so I guess it's not surprising I like illustrators.  I felt bad cutting these pages out of a book but my mom had 2 paperback copies and promised she didn't mind me using one.  It's so nice to look at them while I change Miles.  Should I write in Miles on the boat and cross out Max?  The frames I got from Ikea.  I liked the grey color- not as dramatic as black but still makes a statement.

This round basket hamper reminded me of rope, was one of the first things I bought.  I saw it at Target and I couldn't stop thinking about it so I went back to get it later.  It goes so well with the room- instead of an ugly plastic thing.

I thought the turtle lamp was cool and could grow with the boys as well, another Hobby Lobby find.  It's heavy and it feels like some kind of stone.  I love the pattern on the shell at night.  Perfect for when you need a little light but not the big bright light.

Since these swim trunks matched the theme so well I keep them on the closet door for now! I learned my lesson with Olly and always buy swim trunks a size smaller- why are boy swim trunks so HUGE? The plant shelf needs some help.  I let Olly pick one model ship from Hobby Lobby and he picked the pirate ship.  Part of me wants to get lots of cool boats to fill the space, but part of me wants to leave just a few things up there- a carved elephant from Marti's travels and a wooden mask from Matt's mission in Argentina.  Then later add to it with other souvenirs from trips.
I stood on the dresser to get this angle.
The name sign is chalkboard.  I got it from Very Jane as part of my winnings in a blog giveaway.  We still hadn't decided on a name so I got these instead.  You know you're having a hard time deciding on a name when you buy chalk boards for the name! This room feels so decorated compared to the rest of the house.  I'm still slowly putting stuff back up after the painting/remodeling.  Kids' rooms are so much fun to decorate- as long as they don't have an opinion yet! You think if I read them enough Harry Potter when they're older they'll let me do a Harry Potter theme like this room (there are some hilarious other nursery themes on the page too) next time?

Things I might still do:
-Paint the short wall with the plant shelf/closet navy blue
or
-Paint one or two walls with thick grey and white horizontal stripes like this or this?  Opinions?
-Get an oar or paint one to look like this or this
-Make a mobile using maps made into paper airplanes hanging from a life preserver- similar to this
-A picture of Miles above the bed?
-Fix/replace the light on the ceiling fan- the fan works but the light doesn't
-Some day build a loft like this, or this,  this, or this would be awesome!

Thanks for checking it out!

  1. Those flags are pretty cool. And that wooden steering wheel or whatever it's called. I'm excited to finally see the nursery. If only I had the time/money to do a nursery. Ever. I'm pathetic.

  3. My Elephant made it! Since it came all the way from the Cayman Islands it's very fitting that it would sit with a pirate ship.

  4. I love it all! The flags are my favorite part too! And honestly, when you calculate the costs of all the materials, spending a bit more to have one someone else made just makes more sense. And funny thing, my Miles has a map in his room too :) I love the idea of the plant shelves being filled with souvenirs. I have tons of plant shelves in my house and they are so hard to find inspiration on ways to use them. All I really see is country stuff and ivy so this is extra lovely! Great job!

  5. Oh man, I thought I already made a comment. Guess I had a senior moment. Anyway, it looks very nice. How did my daughters get so talented? All of you including Mindy & Emilee have some wonderful skills. I love seeing all of the things you make and create. Thanks for sharing. Love Mom
