Mom Turns 60!

Have you ever been to a funeral and thought, "It's a shame the person isn't here to hear all of these nice things everyone is saying about them, and see all the people that came because they loved them so much."  I personally like to think we get to come back and listen in.   Since my mom is turning 60 we decided to tell her some of the things we love about her when she's still around (not that we think you're dying anytime soon or anything mom!)  Here's the message I wrote for my mom-

The older I get the more I appreciate what a wonderful mom you are.  Especially as a mom now myself I am amazed at how patient, thoughtful, and loving you were with so many kids needing so many things.  You taught us to be self-sufficient and let us be responsible for ourselves.

It’s the everyday service that I remember the most.  You always made us breakfast and dinner- even if it was just cereal we sat down together as a family and ate.  Then you would pack our lunches (even in high school).  I had a wonderful happy childhood because you let us just be kids and didn't worry about the mess.  I remember one birthday, probably when I was about 10, I was feeling like I should get everything I wanted that day.  You took time out of your busy morning to make me a BLT sandwich for my lunch box for school and a note.  I was so touched that you would do that for me.  I liked the security of getting to visit you at school during the day- helping grade papers and organize books.  Probably a big part of why I decided to be a teacher.

You taught us to work hard by example.   You taught school all day, chauffeured and cooked for us at night, always had demanding callings at church and rarely complained about any of it.  I don't know how you did it.  It makes me tired thinking about it.  You were the young women’s president for forever- most of the time I was in there- and I missed you the last few years not seeing you at girl’s camp when you was released.

You are so sincere and sweet.  You can have three grand kids crying and holding on your legs and you're still smiling.

You are inventive and talented.  Growing up in a small house and on one income for so long I think you learned to make do without. You sewed us many beautiful dresses.  I was always proud when someone would ask me if my mom made my dress and I could say yes.  I appreciate that you made my temple dress for me.  I love that you taught me how to sew and quilt.  I like that it’s a hobby that we share and that you shared with your mom.
No matter how old I get you're always helping me.  When we bought our house you came and painted. When I was pregnant with Charlotte you came and helped me pack up and clean my entire classroom.  Then again when I was pregnant with the twins you came for most of the six weeks, during your precious summer break, to help take care of Charlotte and keep me on the couch.  It was so kind of you and dad to fast for me every Sunday.  I think a big part of the twins making it so long and doing so well is because of your service and faith on our behalf.

One of the best qualities about you mom is that you are humble and know what is truly important.  You aren't vain or materialistic.  You love your family.  You are a good friend.  You love and live the gospel.  I love you mom!  Happy 60th birthday!
***If you know my mom and want to add to her memory book/blog send me an e-mail with your memory or message and we'll put it in.
