The end of blogging as we know it- 5th year

I started blogging the summer I finished teaching while I was pregnant with Charlotte- 5 years ago.  At that point it seemed everyone I knew had a blog.  Every day was this constant checking to see who had updated.     Every post averaged about 8 comments- way more for big announcements or cloth diapers or flooring experiments.  Last month I put up ridiculous pictures of myself running while pregnant and I got 4 comments, from my sisters and my running partner, and one other friend- and most of them were 1-2 weeks after I posted.  It was depressing, I'm not gonna lie.  I totally blog for the comments.

Now blogland feels decidedly like a ghost town.  Even google reader abandoned ship.  I'm currently trying feedly and bloglovin' any other new readers you guys like?  Before I could barely keep up on my 50 blogs I subscribe to.  I have at least 20 that should be deleted because they haven't put up a single post in a year or more.  It seems only the career bloggers blog on a regular basis.  I love blogs so much- the personality, the pictures, the writing styles, the cool things on the sidebars, the backgrounds and headers.  It's so me.  I blame facebook, and twitter, and instagram whatever else people are into these days.  It's all about the one or two sentence share.  No effort involved on either end- post, "like it", move on.  No thoughtful banter in the comments, no explaining your thoughts.  Some people I'm perfectly fine with a fb relationship, and I don't share my blog with people I don't know very well, but I miss hearing about my distant relatives' kids.  Now I'll admit I took a couple months off after Christmas during my first trimester exhaustion but I've been pretty consistently putting about 4 posts a month my whole time blogging.

2008-40 posts
2009-58 posts
2010-53 posts
2011-40 posts
2012-63 posts (mostly thanks to the new camera!)
2013-14 posts

I love my blog- I will find myself up way too late reading through old blog posts that I wrote!  It's ridiculous!  It's like the best journal ever because it's only the highlights, lots of pictures, and mostly the good stuff!  So those of you that gave up blogging- if you're even reading this- what was the reason behind it you think?

  1. I haven't given up. I stopped, severely slowed down during the last year of fussy baby not sleeping and bathroom remodeling. He's been so crazy at destroying the house, that his naptime became cleaning time instead of blog time. But you know all this. I love love blogging too, and I want to keep doing it for myself, and my family, even though everyone has quit.

  2. I am a lot slower at reading the blogs than I used to be. I had to create a folder in my favorites called "Archived Blogs" for all those blogs that never get updated anymore. I'm glad that you and Alyn are still pretty consistent!!
