Bucket o' Snow and Silverstein

Tangent-
I heard once that Shel Silverstein books were the most often stolen books from libraries.
 I believe it.

I remember the first time I read one of his books of poems, I was laying on the floor in Mrs. Heisley's 5th grade class under the horseshoe table in the back, and I couldn't stop giggling.  I had the distinct thought, "Wow poems aren't always dumb."  Don't get me wrong I've since read a good amount of "good" poetry, but if you want your kids to like it no one does it better than Mr. Silverstein.  The man is a poetry genius.  Charlotte already loves them.  Anyway, this poem hung on my 5th grade classroom door all winter. Most of my class had it memorized on their own. Just thought I'd share it with you.  Enjoy!

Snowball
by Shel Silverstein
I made myself a snow ball as perfect as could be.
I thought I'd keep it as a pet and let it sleep with me.
I made it some pajamas and a pillow for it's head.
Then, last night it ran away.
But first -- it wet the bed.

......................................Thanks for reading. Tangent over....................................

I tried talking everyone into going and playing in the snow while we were in Cornville but I wasn't persuasive enough. So my inventive dad who works at Sterling Springs Fish Hatchery up Oak Creek Canyon between Sedona and Flagstaff (where it's colder and permanently shady) brought home a few buckets for the kids to play in.  It was a huge hit- and no snow gear needed!

Charlotte's first snow ball fight.  She was so excited!  Matt was the target of choice for the kiddos.

  1. I have always loved Shel Silverstein. I had A Light in the Attic and Where the Sidewalk Ends memorized. In high school I had to portray a poet and chose him. I dressed like him and recited "A Boy Named Sue" which then turned me on to Johnny Cash and in turn got me familiar with Bob Dylan, and Dave Matthews among others. Shel Silverstein opens doors. There is my tangent in your comments.
Also that snowball fight looks like the best kind. What a fun idea. I love the action shots and am loving the pictures you are taking with your new camera!!

  2. Does having a lost phone mean more blogging time? Love the largest pictures. Stop making me homesick!

    1. My husband working so much means more blogging time since I'm trying to be good and not watch our shows without him at night. I can actually be on my computer without the kids. Plus I was checking my e-mail, facebook etc on my phone and now I can't so I need to use my computer more for that I guess. I finally got my pictures uploaded and I took a ton so I'm blogging way too much! We miss you too! I always debate if I should do the x-large pictures...
