Cinderella

"Cinderelly Cinderlly night and day it's Cinderelly.  Do the washin' and the moppin' they always keep her hoppin'. She goes around in circles til she's very very dizzy keep her busy Cinderelly" as sung by Charlotte

After seeing how much Charlotte loved wearing her borrowed Snow White costume for Halloween I knew I wanted to make this Cinderella dress.  I found this tutorial on Pinterest for making it without a pattern that looked pretty easy.  I ended up borrowing a pattern that I used for parts of it but still following the tutorial instructions.  I bought all the material when it was 50% off at JoAnn's around Halloween.  It ended up costing less than the store bought ones for much better quality.

It took all of my free time in December and Charlotte totally knew what I was doing since I couldn't hide everything while she was awake.  I just kept telling her it was a surprise and she'd find out on Christmas.  It was from me anyway so the surprise factor wasn't as big of a deal.
As soon as she opened it Christmas morning she stripped off her jammies and put it on and went to get her glass slippers from her room.  What a girl!

She kept talking about all the accessories- so after finally finishing the dress on the morning of the 24th  I used the scraps to make-

a headband
I might make more of these it was so fun.
finger less gloves
There's a small piece of elastic for one finger to go through.  I would make them more fitted but they're so easy for her to put on herself.

and a choker necklace.

I love the detail on the bodice but if I could offer one piece of advice it's would be to use ribbon or something other than trim that frays every time you blink.  I've had to "tack" it down on almost every inch several times.
See those white puffy things- they're called peplums.  Don't you feel educated now.

Displaying her concentration and poise at a Fancy Nancy party.

She wears it about half of every day.  Olly can say "relly" and knows what she looks like and Abby says "susses" for princess.

I'm pleased with how it turned out.  This is the first time I made a dress without any help from my mom. I only made a few mistakes- one involving a trip to JoAnn's with all three kids in their jammies at 7:30pm. The sleeves were the hardest part.  My iron also decided to die during this project. I made it large so hopefully it will fit for a while.  The bodice material is stretchy as well and it's velcro in the back so she can put it on and off herself.  Since heaven knows I'm not going to do that all day long.  What are the odds I can talk her into being Cinderella for Halloween next year?  She'll probably change her mind a million times by then.

  4. Thanks guys! It was fun to try a more challenging sewing project- but honestly I just kept thinking "I'm so dumb to always attempt a big sewing project on top of the rest of the December craziness." You think I would have learned my lesson last year with making Charlotte's pajamas.

  7. You did such an awesome job! I love it! I bet the sleeves were hard. Sleeves are hard without the poof so I can only imagine them with it.I remember when I was little, Grandma Tayrien made me one for Halloween! She will cherish it forever since her momma made it! Good job!
