Cabin Fever

People used to live so far apart that in the winter they would be snowed in and go months at a time without seeing another soul. This was known as cabin fever. So it's only been a week and I haven't been completely isolated but I'm feeling it... No playgroups, no shopping trips, no church, very few visitors. We went to the doctor and the physical therapist. That's it. I am by nature a social person. That's one of the reasons I miss teaching- there was a constant audience. This is also probably why I'm such a comment beggar!

A few weeks ago I was feeling under the weather. Runny nose, sore throat... you know what I mean. Luckily Matt and Charlotte didn't get it. I get sick so rarely I can remember every time I've been sick in the last 5 years. I should have had my share for the next year or two right?

I have been meaning to take Charlotte to the school where I worked to meet the teachers and students. My students have been e-mailing me asking if I was EVER going to bring her. Anyone who has been a teacher knows that schools are an incubator for every disease known to human kind. I have a pretty tough immune system but I took Vitamin C every day that I taught and still got my share of sicknesses.

Now that she is finally 6 months and it's spring I figured it would be pretty safe to bring her in. She has gone her entire life so far without really getting sick, a runny nose here, a fever from shots once but that's it. Well last Friday before we even left the school she was coughing. By Saturday she had a mild fever, and for the rest of the week she has been a major fussy-bucket-hates-getting-her-nose-wiped baby. Her breathing sounds like a purring cat. This was one "first" I was definitely dreading. I took her to the doctor on Tuesday... just a cold.
Okay I know she probably got it before we went to the school but it's quite the coincidence huh?

This is obviously an old picture... I just needed a good crying face
By Thursday Matt and I had it too.

Also an old picture. This is from when we lived in our apartment. I fell asleep and Matt put me in an afghan cocoon.

Life is hard when everyone is sick. You're all cranky, tired, with no energy... who is supposed to take care of you when you're all sick? Of course I'm taking care of Charlotte but I'm pretty drained. At night she's been getting up a little earlier each night and I don't have the heart or energy to fight it when we're both sick. So I get up, feed her, she coughs and spits it all over both of us, feed her again, coughs, spits up again. Here's how tired I am... I wipe us off and we both go back to bed.

My sister is right; moms don't get a sick day. I guess I should be used to it since as a teacher I NEVER took a sick day because it was more work to prepare for a sub than to just go in. But at least I could go home early, and sleep all night, and someone wasn't crying at me all day(usually).

Anyone want to come and baby ME?

Silver Lining: (lest you think this is just a complaining post)
-She has been taking one 2-3 hour nap each day which is unheard of for her. Unfortunately I am dumb and I do other things while she's napping instead of taking a nap too. I did get a good nap on Saturday and Sunday thanks to Matt.

-It really hasn't been that bad of a cold for her. She is happy some of the time, not much of a fever most days.

Thanks for listening (reading). Sometimes I just need to tell someone my troubles to make me feel better.

  1. I wish I could give a sick Mom a break. If good thoughts count you would have felt better. Believe me I understand. Take care, Love Mom

  3. I do think being the mom is the HARDEST job to have when you're sick. It's a pretty relentless job as it is and when you don't have energy? Well, a joy of a job turns into a very painful one. I hope you feel better very soon. I'm glad she's not old enough to run around and destroy the house while you're sick so that you are sick and frustrated that your house is a complete disaster....
    Feel better soon.

  5. I swear, mothers should NEVER be allowed to get sick! But it does make you buff. And you'll get stronger the more kids you have and the more often you're sick. It's kinda impressive. Makes you feel like a mountain woman. :)

And I soooo relate to the cabin fever. I don't think I could ever live in the country. I get nervous without immediate next door neighbors. I love the city!

Hope you guys all get better soon ... and then never get sick again!

  6. Aww, that stinks! I hope you all feel better soon. It is so true--moms don't get sick days. We just have to tough it out!

  7. Yeah, I'm a bad sister because I've only seen you for two seconds when I happened to walk by when you were outside for two minutes saying goodbye to Matt, sorry. I guess my only lame excuse is that I don't want a cold on top of being 31 weeks pregnant and uncomfortable already. My bladder control is already pitiful without coughing.

  9. Thanks for all the well wishes. I guess I don't have much room to complain when some of you are probably going through the same thing with multiple kids! Don't feel bad Kori... I don't want to get a pregnant person sick... you have been calling to see how I'm doing. I'm just sorry my visiting teachers came. I hope they didn't catch it. I thought Charlotte was almost over it and I didn't realize I was getting it!

  10. I think that you could have written the whole post without the silver lining and we'd all still love you just as much. Sounds like a miserable time and I hope that you are all healthy for the next six months.

  11. So sorry you have all been sick! The only thing worse than having a sick baby is having a sick mommy at the same time! NO FUN!! I'm glad it's only a cold and not something worse like RSV! Hope you all get feeling better soon!
