Dora/Cars birthday Splash pad party

104 degrees
30 kids
12 adults
2 birthday kids
4 dozen cupcakes
Lots of popsicles
A last minute change of location
and it was still a great party!
New cars and trains for his birthday- I think he's got cars and trains for everything birthday and he still can't get enough.

His first big Tonka truck from Grandma and Grandpa Whitmer

Dora and Cars #3 cake.  Matt got home before I finished frosting it and took a chunk out of my 3 cake I stopped him before he ate it.  He thought those were the scraps not the actual cake!

Party at the splash pad.

Every year I think- let's do something simple for this kid's birthday.  And every year I can't mange simple. I just have way too many people I love to invite and no matter how hard I try I end up making 4 dozen cupcakes on a 115 degree day and buying 18 sand buckets at the dollar store.  I just love to throw parties. I planned to just hijack the weekly church play date at the splash pad and bring some cupcakes and Popsicles and invite a few extra friends and call it good.

Usually we go to the splash pad and we're the only ones who come, or we get a couple families to join us at the most.  I invited lots of people thinking I would at least get a few people and since it wasn't at my house I wasn't as worried about the number.  I was still surprised that we got 30 kids and 12 adults 4th of July week.  The twins felt very loved and had so much fun with all their friends.  Since I asked that parents stay and it was outside too it never felt too crazy.  I never know if you're supposed to stay with your kids at a party or drop them off.  I always feel bad leaving them but I know they aren't always planning on feeding extra adults... I'm still figuring that one out.

I got to the splash pad 40 minutes early to put out some table clothes- haul the ice chest etc. only to see lots of trucks and a sign saying the splash pad was closed for the Tempe Town Lake 4th of July  party set-up all week.  I called and asked what days they were open at the beginning of the summer- and I checked their website the week before and there was no note of the closure.  The letter of complaint has been written- this is not the first time they were closed when they were supposed to be open.  So I quickly texted (thank goodness most people have cell phones) all the other people and gave them the address of another smaller splash pad about .5 mile away.  It was way less busy so that was a plus but a few people had a hard time getting the message or finding it.

Olly requested a cars party and Abby wanted Dora- that was not a mash-up party I wanted to do so I was glad not to try to decorate (and clean) my house.  The splashpad was a big hit but man was it so hot.  I wish at least one of my kids had a birthday when it wasn't so hot but considering it's hot 8 months of the year here I guess I would be out of luck most of the time.

Thanks friends for making the Oliver and Abigail's birthday so fun!
