The vacuum we bought 8 years ago when we got married had reached the end of it's life- it was losing suction and had multiple other issues. I kept it going for awhile by cleaning it but it was on it's way out. We picked it out based solely on the fact that we could use a gift card from our wedding and pay for the whole thing. It's been a good vacuum and I really liked the bagless feature. I decided I would borrow my sister's Dyson to see if it really was worth all the hype and compare it to my dying vacuum. You know how I love an experiment Maybe I should work for consumer reports...
Procedures
Step 1. Empty all vacuums.
Step 2. Vacuum living room rug with old vacuum
Results- Nada. I swear it wasn't this bad before. I could tell I was picking up less but it was never totally empty afterwards. So this wasn't the best experiment since one vacuum did absolutely nothing!
Step 3. Vacuum exact same rug with sister's borrowed Dyson.
Results- much better. I also vacuumed my car and couch to see how it did. The suction was great and it picked up a lot. I will say the hand tools didn't pick up hair as well as my old vacuum. The highest rated was actually a Hoover for only about $100-150 but the warranty was much shorter. I spent way too much time reading reviews of the Dyson that didn't rank very well on consumer reports and the Hoover that did rank well. Reviews aren't helpful- half of the people love them and half hate them. People rave about their Dyson's- but I've always been one to not want to do something just because it's popular. Finally I sent Matt to Costco and told him to surprise me. Luckily he didn't come home with a toilet seat again. He came home with the Dyson that had a coupon going. Honestly it gets the job done and I can stop worrying about it. Hopefully it lives up to it's warranty since it is pricier than the Hoover would have been.
The Dyson we got is a different model than this one- the kind with the ball- which I do like. Here's a link to the one we got the DC25- not as many bells and whistles and attachments as some of the Dysons but it does a good job. Anyone love or hate their vacuum?
After 6 years, 3 small kids- including potty training, and doing a major dusty remodeling project last year, our carpet needs cleaned. Any recommendations of a company from my friends near me? Is it worth it to just pay someone to come do it- or if you rent a machine does it do a pretty good job? Thanks for your help!
Glad I could contribute to your experiment.
ReplyDeleteI just did the same routine with our 13 yr old vacuum and the Costco run - except I got the Electrolux. The first time I used it, it was like a game to see how much gunk had been hanging out in my carpet.
ReplyDeletePay someone! By the time you buy the soap it is about $40 and it doesn't clean as well. I did a rug doctor at my sister's and had lots of filthy water come out but it still had some stains. She had a company come out three weeks later and it looked like brand new carpet. You can often get three rooms for around $60 with a Groupon or sale. I just tried chemdry and was unimpressed so I'm doing steam for the next round.
